How To Cook Steak in An Air Fryer

I just realized that I forgot to defrost the steak for dinner. Can you use an air fryer for a frozen steak? Yes! There are some simple steps to do this!

First, preheat the air fryer so it can warm up while you prepare the meat. Season the meat with olive oil, salt, black pepper, and steak seasoning. Follow the directions below, but add a couple of minutes to the time, since you are starting from a frozen state.

Heres What Im Going To Teach You In This Post:

  • How to cook the best sirloin steak in the air fryer
  • How long to cook steak depending on your desired level of doneness
  • Why we always let steak rest before slicing
  • What to serve with air fryer steak
  • How to reheat steak in the air fryer

Whether youre entertaining dinner guests, prepping a nice family dinner, or just want to treat yourself to some red meat, making steak in the air fryer is a fantastic option.

Especially when the recipe is so easy! The simple garlic herb butter on top really takes the entire dish to the next level.

I made this recipe using the 5.8 QT Cosori Air Fryer. Its square basket makes it the perfect size for our family of 4.

Storage And Reheating Tips

Steak is best served right after cooking, but that doesnt mean that the leftovers wont make a delicious steak sandwich. Cooked steak may be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can also freeze cooked steak, wrapped airtight, for up to 3 months.

To reheat:

  • Oven: Wrap steak in foil to seal in moisture and heat in a 350° F oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until hot.
  • Microwave: Reheat gently in the microwave until hot. Slicing the steak can help it to heat through evenly.
  • Air Fryer: Steak will only take a few minutes to reheat in the air fryer. Heat at 360° F, checking on it every 2 minutes, until hot.

Questions About The Recipe

What type of air fryer can I cook this in?

It doesnt matter what type of air fryer you have, you can use this recipe. Its fine to use a basket style or an oven style air fryer, or a Ninja Foodie. If your air fryer requires a pre-heating, go ahead and do so before cooking. You may have to adjust the cook time for this, but thats not a problem because youre going to use your meat thermometer to determine the doneness anyway.

How long does it take to cook steak in the air fryer?

There is no one-time-fits-all approach to cooking steak in the air fryer. While you can play it by ear a little bit, cooking your steak from 6 minutes up to 14 minutes which will lead to varying degrees of doneness if you want it to be an exact doneness, you need to check it with a thermometer to know for sure.

Do you need to flip a steak in the air fryer?

Yes, its best to flip the steak one time while cooking in the air fryer. This will ensure that both sides get equally cooked. I like to flip them over at the 2/3 mark in the cooking. Since the first side starts cooking from cold, this will give it the most even distribution of time on each side.

Can You Put Foil In An Air Fryer

Air Fryer Paleo Sirloin Steak

The answer is yes, but it depends on the specific air fryer you are using and whether or not you are using it on a low or high heat setting.

If youre using an air fryer on a low heat setting, then no, foil will not help prevent sticking. However, if youre on a high heat setting and your air fryer has a foil shield, then putting foil over the top will help to prevent sticking.

If you decide to try putting foil in your air fryer, make sure you do so at least once per month to ensure that it is effective in preventing sticking.
