Why Is Skirt Steak So Expensive
Contributing to the rise in prices is heavy export of the skirt steak to Japan. Because the diaphragm is classified as offal, not muscle meat, it was exported in larger quantities than other cuts of beef to Japan, which, until last month, imposed stringent import quotas on cuts of beef other than offal.

Sure, that diced melon could win a beauty pageant, and the spiralized squash looks straight from a cookbook photo. But you should avoid buying those pre-cut fruits and veggies, McMordie says. “The prices on pre-cut melon, spiralized veggies, and other packaged, pre-cut produce is ridiculous,” she says. “Buy the whole fruit or vegetable and cut it up as soon as you get home. You just saved a ton of money for the same exact thing.”
Shop On A Full Stomach
You know the rule! Shop on a full stomach or risk filling up your cart with organic cookiesâwhich, by the way, are still cookies. “Unless you’re going to Whole Foods to eat a meal, do not go there on an empty stomach,” says Valerie Agyeman, a registered dietitian in Washington, D.C. “It’s very easy for shoppers to be tempted when you are hungry while grocery shopping.”
Tender Marbled Beef Flat Iron Steak:
The Flat Iron Steak is cut from the shoulder on top of the blade bone & is called Feather-blade when both muscles are together. Our expert butchers split both muscles & remove the silver membrane to leave two separate flat steak pieces. All the excess fat is removed from the outer side of the meat to leave these ready to cook.
The Feather Blade gets its name from the fat marbling through the meat, as its appearance resembles the way feathers are laid out on the wings of a bird.
Each of the muscles has great natural marbling in them as you would expect from good graded beef. The marbling then adds to the flavour of the beef & keeps it moist during your cook. The Flat Iron Steak is great when cooked whole & left a little Pink inside. Once rested for 10 mins after cooking, then slice the Flat Iron at an acute angleto make thin wide succulent steaks that are tender & full of flavour.
The Flat Iron Steak is excellent value for money because there is no waste & we have made this a more affordable to buy online.
We pack our Flat Iron into a clear recyclable pouch immediately after they are cut to give as fresher product possible & to give a longer shelf life. As our meats are all produced at very low temperatures, the pouches keep all the natural moisture locked into the meat to stop them from bleeding & reducing their weight. We have single packed these flat so they keep their shape when thawing out & they are much easier to store in the freezer at home.
What Is Flat Iron Steak
Originally part of the top blade roast, the flat iron was born as a result of the tough connective tissue that ran through the middle of the cut of meat. Once this is removed, the two pieces are treated separately, one becoming the flat iron steak, the other called the top blade steak. The flat iron is uniform in thickness and rectangular in shape.
The nice amount of marbling creates a steak that is extremely tender and full of flavor. It is best when cooked on the grill and can be incorporated in a variety of recipes.

That avocado that’s marked up because it’s organic? You’re fine to buy a less-expensive counterpart. That’s because avocados have thick outer skins to protect the inner flesh from pesticide residues, says Tieraona Low Dog, chief medical officer of Well & Being and director for the first Interprofessional Fellowship in Integrative Health and Medicine. I Try A New Take On Steak And Peppers
When it comes to flavor, its hard to beat a well-marbled rib eye. But when it comes to cost without sacrificing flavor, I go for the flatiron. It comes from the top of the shoulder and is sometimes called a top blade, top boneless chuck or petite steak. Its used in steak frites in restaurants, and its sometimes hard to find at a standard grocer. When trimmed out by a good butcher, a tough, sinewy membrane down its center is removed to leave a perfect steak for the grill.
Whole Foods Market offers flatirons that are trimmed and ready to go. I like making them the centerpiece of my meal, but Ive been wanting to try something different to accompany the steaksno potatoes, no rice. I like polenta, but Ive done the sliced polenta sauté ad nauseam. At a stroll through Trader Joes, I spied two beautiful red bell peppers and hatched an idea for the tube of TJs organic polenta in my pantry.
I have a pound of fresh asparagus in the fridge, and the menu is completegrilled flatiron, steamed asparagus and red peppers stuffed with polenta pudding. The stuffed peppers are an experiment, but I figure I cant go too wrong with the following recipe.
1) Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Prepare the peppers by cutting off the tops and removing all of the ribs and seeds.

What Is Flat Iron
So what type of cut is it? The steak comes from the chuck primal of the cow. This area is known for flavor, however it is also known to be tough if not cooked right.
It’s a relatively new steak. The steak is cut from the top blade roast, which has a tough, gristly member that runs in it, which is not desirable. A joint project by the Universities of Nebraska and Florida, found a way to cut the top blade roast to remove this gristly member, offering a steak that would be cheaper than some of the high end options.
The top blade was never considered valuable beyond grinding up as ground chuck, so this new way to cut it up was a game changer.

Flat Iron Steak Vs Flank Steak
Since flat iron steak is not as well known as flank steak, it is easy to confuse the two. However, they are very different cuts of meat, beginning with the part of the cow from which they come. Whereas the flat iron steak is cut from the chuck primalthe shoulder area of the cowa flank steak is cut from the belly muscle, called the flank primal. They are both flavorful and tender, but the flank steak is leaner than the flat iron. The distinctions also reach to their ideal cooking methods both steaks benefit from marinating, but since the flat iron is a thicker, denser cut of beef, it is best when cooked to just medium rare. A flank can be braised and is often used for steak fajitas and carne asada.
Why Is My Steak Chewy
Overcooking can make your meat dry but undercooked meat can be quite chewy. Dont be afraid of an instant-read meat thermometer and pull your meat when its ready. For naturally tender cuts like beef tenderloin, that can be as rare as 125ºF, whereas tougher cuts like brisket should be cooked to 195ºF.

Some cuts I am finding harder to find now, like the T-Bone and the Porterhouse.
Some cuts I am finding easier to find. The topic of today’s post is one of those steaks – the Flat Iron.

Flat Iron steaks have gone from unknown to now sought after. The steak is on more restaurant menus and in more stores than ever.
How has that effected the price. Let me guide you to what is a good price nowadays on a Flat Iron steak.
