Pros And Cons Of Chicago Cutlery Knives

Chicago Cutlery® Insignia 2 TM 18-pc Knife Set

When deciding to buy a new set of knives, many people are drawn to the sleek design and reputation of Chicago Cutlery. However, before making a purchase, it is important to be aware of both the pros and cons of this popular brand.

PROS:

Chicago Cutlery knives are made from high-carbon stainless steel, which makes them extremely sharp and resistant to rusting or staining.

The blades are also heat-treated for additional strength and durability.

The handles are ergonomically designed for comfort and easy grip, even when wet.

Knives in the Chicago Cutlery Fusion line come with a lifetime warranty.

CONS:

Many users find that the blades require frequent sharpening.

Others have complained that the knives are not as durable as they would like, and the handles have been known to loosen or break with extended use.

Chicago Cutlery knives can be more expensive than other brands on the market.

In my opinion, the pros of Chicago Cutlery knives outweigh the cons. The fact that they are made from high-quality materials and come with a lifetime warranty makes them worth the investment. However, it is important to keep in mind that these knives will require more care than some other brands. If you are looking for a durable, affordable option, you may want to consider another brand.

Best Luxury Set: Wsthof Classic Ikon 7

Elegant, sophisticated, ergonomic, sharp as hell. Theres just so much to appreciate about this German-made, handcrafted knife set that includes the four basic knives that a serious home cook needs: an 8-inch chefs knife, 3 1/2-inch paring knife, 6-inch utility knife, 8-inch bread knife, plus come-apart kitchen shears, a 9-inch honing steel and a 15-slot cherry block. This knife set has it all and looks great doing it. Its got history, a classic design and high-tech, high-quality craftsmanship that comes with a lifetime warranty .

The full-tang , triple-riveted polypropylene handles are made for serious wear and tear yet look sleek, with a double bolster that gives them an impressive balance. Thinner than other knives we tested, the handles fit perfectly in a womans hand, but our male tester wished they were a smidge more substantial.

The blades, meanwhile, are a point of differentiation from the other sets. Sure, theyre precision-forged from a single piece of tempered high-carbon stainless steel, making them stain- and corrosion-resistant. So are a few other sets in our testing pool. But their special PEtec edge is created by robots sharpening the blades on a whetstone to a precise and consistent sharpness, making them a self-proclaimed 20% sharper with twice the edge retention, which means youll hardly ever have to sharpen them.

Chicago Cutlery Reviews Wrap Up

What more can we say about a company that has run the gamut of kitchen knife sets? From sets for new home buyers and novice chefs to sets for families and professional cooks? It seems there is no a demographic out there that Chicago Cutlery does not market to. And, now, they have even entered the high-end game, too.

They may never achieve the reverence of a Wusthof Classic or a Kramer by Zwilling J.A. Henckels. It seems that they are certainly going to be making a game stab at it. Hey, if all else fails, at least they are dominating the knife set market, right

Best Overall Knife Set: Chicago Cutlery Fusion 17

First things first: Of the 11 knife sets we tested, this was one of the cheapest. At $129.99, you might reasonably expect theyd be lower quality than their more expensive counterparts. Youd be wrong. We were blown away by the sturdy construction, comfort of use and reliable execution that came with each piece in this all-inclusive set. True, there were sharper, higher-quality knives in several of the other sets we tested, but when it came to overall rankings, performance and consideration of cost, the Chicago Cutlery Fusion 17-Piece Knife Block Set was the clear champion.

One big plus: the whopping 17 included pieces. Besides the classic and heavy chestnut-stained wood block, you get a 7 3/4-inch chefs knife, 7 3/4-inch serrated bread knife, 7-inch santoku knife, 5-inch santoku knife, 5-inch utility knife, 3 1/4-inch paring knife and eight yes, eight! 4 1/2-inch steak knives, plus a sharpening steel and chop assist. The only thing missing is kitchen shears, but you can add a pair like these OXO Good Grips Multipurpose Kitchen Scissors to your utensil drawer later.

Also putting Chicago over the top were all the extras: The steak knives performed great while slicing through grilled filet mignon and the two santoku knives were handy for slicing cheese, mincing garlic and scooping everything off the cutting board.

Notes On Materials And Construction

Vintage Chicago Cutlery 103S Steak Knives Knife Six 6 Hollow

If youve spent more than a few minutes researching knives, youve likely run into a bewildering fog of jargon and technical specifications. Heres a quick guide, which applies to steak knives, chefs knives, and everything in between:

The phrase high-carbon steel is basically marketing hype: every steel alloy used to make knives is high-carbon. You can ignore the phrase it if its used, and you neednt worry if its not. Do note, however, that if a knife is listed only as high-carbon or carbon steel, it will easily rust. To be sure your knife is rust-resistant, make sure it is also listed as stainless.

Stainless steel is steel alloyed with at least 12 percent, and usually 14 to 18 percent, chromium. The chromium forms a dense layer on any exposed surface which rapidly oxidizes, preventing oxidation of the steel underneath. There are multiple types of stainless steel, some more corrosion-resistant than others all those used on our recommended knives are high-performing: extremely corrosion-resistant, capable of taking and holding a sharp edge and easy to re-sharpen.

There are thousands of different steel alloysmixtures of iron, carbon, and any of 20 or more other elementseach designed for a different purpose. Knife alloys alone run into the dozens, and the names are alphabet soup: AEB-L, VG-10, 19C27, ZDP-189. My advice is: ignore them all, at least for steak knives. Whatever alloy a good manufacturer chooses will perform perfectly well.

Bottom Line: Are Chicago Cutlery Knives Any Good

Now that you know the facts, should you buy Chicago Cutlery?

Are these knives any good?

The main advantage of Chicago Cutlery is its price. Simply put, these knives are cheap. Theyre not your forever knives, but if they dull or chip, you can pick up a new set without breaking the bank.

Sure, you can get better performance with other, more expensive brands, but Chicago Cutlery gets the job done, and they have thousands of happy customers to prove it.

If youre looking for decent knives and youre on a tight budget, Chicago Cutlery is a fine choice.

The downsides of Chicago Cutlery knives are the construction and performance. You wont get the same quality, durability, or edge retention as other brands, such as Wüsthof, Zwilling, or Shun, provide.

If you can afford more expensive knives, I wouldnt recommend Chicago Cutlery. Although other brands cost more, theyre built to last a lifetime. Theyll make cooking prep easier, especially if youre making fresh meals every day.

On that note, if youre looking for comparable alternatives to Chicago Cutlery in terms of price, high-end brands do offer discount lines. Check out the Wüsthof Gourmet collection or the Henckels International collection. Both of these collections are discount stamped knives produced by renowned brands.

Chicago Cutlery 42s And 44s Review

psfred said:Typically these knives are variable in quality, depending on age and origin. The ones made from 440C with good heat treatment in the US are not bad, although the profile and geometry isn’t great as found. The ones made in China are junk. QC was quite variable as seen by the obvious differences in geometry for what should be identical knives,I have a pair of 42S knives, sharpened them up at 15 degrees per side, and other than more wedging than I would like, they work pretty well. Edge retention isn’t great, but they are 440 stainless, what do you expect? I may learn to thin using them, good knives for that purpose as I don’t really care if I mess them up.As inexpensive knock around/lending knives they are great, easy to sharpen, hold a usable edge, and cheap enough if they walk off you won’t be crying!Peter

mhpr262 said:Nice work on the blades. Have you buffed them already? I have found hat makes a huge difference regarding stiction/wedging and food release. I would have kept the original handles, though. Those “nice” wood handles seem a case of slight “over-restoration” to me.
