Make your dogs steak as nutritious as possible by cooking it in the oven or on the grill.
Pat the steak dry and add oil to the cooking pan. When the pan is hot, cook the steak in the center for approx. 5 mins, then flip over for another 5 mins.
The USDA recommends cooking ground beef at a minimum 160°F to reduce the risk of salmonella poisoning. If you have a meat thermometer, take care not to overcook the steak.

To avoid bloat, which can be fatal, adult dogs should be fed at least twice a day and should not be exercised immediately before or after eating. This applies particularly to deep-chested dogs such as Boxers and German Shepherds.
Fresh drinking water must be available at all times but do not offer your dog milk as this can cause gastrointestinal upsets.

Do Not Feed Your Dog Raw Meat If He Has A Weak Immune System
If your dog is older or if he has a weak immune system, adding raw meat to his diet could make him sick if hes not used to it.
His body may not be able to fight off certain bacteria the way a healthy dog can, especially if his body is already trying to fight another infection. This happened to my dog Ace.
If you are not sure how your dogs immune system is, talk to his vet and consider a blood test, but most dogs should be just fine.
Precautions With Raw Or Rare Steaks
Raw and rare steaks are dangerous for both you and your dog.
The problem with raw or rare steak is that it might contain harmful bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli, leading to food poisoning.
This can cause serious health problems for you and your dog.
First off, make sure you wash your hands after handling raw meat to avoid spreading any bacteria.
Secondly, dont touch other food, surfaces, or your mouth while handling raw food.
Last but not least, clean and disinfect all surfaces that were touched by the raw meat. Also, wash the dogs bowl after they have finished. Dont let your dog lick you after the meal, and dont let them lick open wounds either!

Myth #: Its Dangerous To Give Bones To Your Dog
Its a fact not all bones are suitable for dogs.
Small, fine bones that may splinter and cooked bones that are brittle can pose a hazard to your dogs health. However, any proponent of raw feeding will tell you that bones of those types arent included in a raw meat diet for dogs.
Wild dogs and wolves gnaw on raw bones to get essential calcium and to help to keep their teeth clean and strong. Providing that you choose dog-safe bones and prepare them correctly to match your dogs size and life stage, they make up an essential, healthy, highly palatable addition to your dogs diet.

Can You Give Dog Cooked Oats
- Generally, you can feed your dog one tablespoon of cooked oatmeal for every 20 pounds of his weight. Don’t give your dog too much oatmeal at once because it contains a lot of carbohydrates and is relatively high in calories. Consuming a large amount can also lead to diarrhea, vomiting, and/or bloat, which can be life threatening.

But offering your dog a little raw hamburger or small pieces of raw steak wont hurt them occasionally if you have followed good food handling practices with the food.
Obviously, you should avoid giving your dog any food that is suspicious & ndash food that might be spoiled or starting to go bad. Dont give your dog meat that you wouldnt eat yourself or you could wind up taking your dog to the vet. Your dog is able to eat food that people cant eat, but pet dogs often have more sensitive stomachs than dogs in the wild.

Put your pup in their dog crate, or somewhere locked away so they cant get into anything else. Make sure youve picked up any possible leftover bones so that theres no future danger if Fido decides to start sniffing around again.

Dont Do This When Giving Your Dog A Bone
Dont give your dog the wrong kind of bone. This includes poultry bones and pork bones. Rib bones, especially pork rib bones, are high in fat. Dogs arent built to handle this amount of saturated fat and can suffer from pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, often caused by too much fat in the diet and can range from mild to severe, but typically shows up as vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, and a loss of appetite. Severe cases can be deadly, so its important to seek veterinary attention right away.
Dont give you dog cooked bones of any kind. They splinter into shards that can cause choking and serious damage to the dogs mouth, throat, or intestines. Cooking can also remove nutrients from the bone. If your dog does ingest cooked bones, give your veterinarian a call for advice or to schedule an appointment to rule out any serious outcomes. Be careful to keep platters containing bones out of reach when youre cooking or putting food on the table. And dont put bones in any trashcans that your dog might be able to get into.
Dont give your dog chunks of bone that can cause blockages. The chance of the chunks getting stuck in the intestines is fairly high. This happens when a bone fragment is too large to pass through the gut and obstructs the flow of all other digested food through the gastrointestinal tract. Obstructions are very serious and can quickly lead to severe illness and death.
Risks Of Eating Raw Steak
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association , raw and undercooked meat can contain various bacteria and pathogens, such as salmonella and listeria, that pose risks to dogs and the people around them.
The risk of a raw food diet for dogs is riskier to humans and can be lessened by cleaning your pets food dish immediately after feeding. Dogs are less likely to be affected by the bacteria in raw meat but are carriers that can be passed to humans.

Is Raw Beef Right For Your Dog
Absolutely, dogs have forgiving digestive systems. With higher acidity in their stomachs and shorter intestinal tracts, they can eat raw meat that may harbor salmonella or listeria spores with no problem and before you panic, some pathogens are completely normal. Remember, were talking real, whole, fresh food.
We hoomans have more sensitive digestive systems that allow those bacteria to wreak havoc for us, which is why were hyper-aware of naturally occurring pathogens in our food.
Thats not to say a big dose of salmonella or listeria from 4D meats that are contaminated or spoiled wouldnt cause a problem for your dog. Again, its all about choosing high-quality sources.
Any dog who is immunocompromised should avoid raw meats. With a weakened immune system, their body isnt functioning at 100%, making them more vulnerable to pathogen loads. To not deprive these pups entirely, you could cook the beef lightly or opt for a freeze-dried option.
Are There Risks To Giving Dogs Raw Meat
In addition to the risk of nutritional deficiencies, raw meat does pose other health risksboth for you and your dog.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration , Centers for Disease Control & Prevention and the American Veterinary Medical Association have all spoken out about the dangers of feeding raw meat.
Not only does it pose a risk to your dog, but it poses a risk to you and your family, according to an FDA study. Raw meat is likely to contain harmful bacteria like Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli and more.
Cooking meat to a safe temperature kills off those harmful bacteria. By feeding uncooked meat, theres a higher risk your dog will develop a foodborne illness or other type of bacterial infection. Additionally, theres an increased risk you or a member of your family will come into contact with the bacteria and develop a foodborne illness. Handling the raw meat, letting your dog lick your face, cleaning up his feces or touching any contaminated surfaces increase the risk of infection. If you do choose to feed your dog a RFD, we recommend referring to the safety guidelines published by the FDA, CDC or AVMA. Doing so will help minimize the risks of contamination and foodborne illnesses. Its worth noting many therapy dog associations, such as Pet Partners, prohibit dogs on RFDs from being part of their program. This is because the raw food poses too much risk for the humans they are trained to help.
