Camp Chef Woodwind Wifi

Z Grills Pellet Grill: Searing Steaks at Over 600F! [Easy Grill Trick!]

The overall best pellet grill for searing in our opinion is the Camp Chef Woodwind WiFi pellet grill and by a pretty wide margin. The design of this grill incorporates all of the features we already touched on, plus some more.

For your searing, the Woodwind comes with an option to include a gas powered sear box that can really crank up the heat. The cast aluminum burner is also strong and durable enough to hold large pots, cast iron skillets, and even small outdoor pizza ovens.

On top of that, the Woodwind series from Camp Chef has a built in sliding heat diffusor plate that you can adjust to expose your fire pot if you want to sear. This allows for you to decide if you want to sear your meat over direct heat flames or cook with indirect heat.

This thing also has a great temperature range of 180-500°F, affording you a ton of versatility, and also comes in a larger model the Woodwind WiFi 36, if you want the extra cooking space.

This grill also comes able to connect to Camp Chefs mobile app where you can control all aspects of your cook wirelessly. Everything from turning your grill on, to monitoring your foods temperature, to setting your smoke levels can be done right there on the app.

A sear box works just as well as a pellet grill does in terms of giving you that beautiful, caramelized crust on the meat. However, a pellet grill is a perfect option for those who are looking for an all-in-one option.

You can use pellet grills for grilling, cooking, roasting, and to get that perfect sear with the smoke-infused flavor, recreating the ideal restaurant experience you can even use a pellet grill to cook burgers!

How To Choose The Pellet Grill For Searing

Pellet Grill gives your food a delicious smoky flavor and is one of the best and most convenient ways to give your family a beautiful holiday or weekend cookout experience. This is the best option for searing meat on your patio, backyard, or camping trip.

With this in mind, you should consider several aspects while choosing the pellet smokers or grills. As different models come with different features. So here is the buying guide that helps you make the right decision.

Temperature Range

Temperature range is the first thing you should consider when buying a pellet grill. At the same time, most grills offer high temperatures for roasting, grilling, and searing that require a great deal of heat. The right pellet grill should have a temperature range up to 900 .

This temperature will provide the best heat to give your meat a seared and appealing appearance. In most cases, you can only gain this with a charcoal grill. When you have the power to control the heat of your grill, you have the power to cook more large-scale foods to ideal end results.

Cooking Surface

Depending on your specific wants, the size of your pellet grill could easily be the most vital factor. The size of a grill can refer to both the units actual size and the cooking area inside the grill.

So, consider your needs and space convenience before you choose the option for your particular needs.

Why Searing On Pellet Grills Is The Way

As professional chef or the go-to guy for that family barbeque, the end game is the same, to create good food. With a searing pellet grill, enabling this goal just became a lot easier and a lot safer. Searing with pellet grills allows for a more hands-off cooking process allowing you time to yourself, your friends and family. No more messing with charcoal, or lighter fluid, no more standing by the grill babysitting the fire. All you need to do is fill the hopper with some pellets turn it on, set the desired searing temperature, press the ignition button and let the grill do the rest.

However, the reason why pellet grills are taking over the searing cooking scene is their remarkable wood smoke flavor. You will not want to taste seared steak that does not have that pellet wood smoke flavor once you have tried it.

While you are searing on the grill, the steak is not in full contact with the grilling. Whereas, when you are cooking on pan, it takes less time because the meat is entirely in connection with the pan. So, when you are using the Pellet grill, make sure it is preheated.

Pellet Smoker Grills That Can Sear Meat

Most wood pellet smokers and grills cook using indirect heat similar to a convection oven rather than direct flame like a campfire to cook. This seems to make searing more difficult. Not impossible, just more difficult. There are, however, more and more pellet grills coming online that offer a direct flame cooking option and by extension, meat searing! Ill list out a few here shortly.

What is searing anyway and why do barbeque fans want to do it? Searing is a cooking technique that works for just about any kind of meat: beef, lamb, chicken, spam, or pork. This technique can improve appearance , improve texture, and enhance the flavor of the meat.

When I got my first pellet smoker grill, a Traeger Lil Tex Elite back in 2014, the steaks I pulled off the grill didnt impress my wife that much. The flavor was good, but they lacked those all-important grill marks and char that we got with our direct-flame propane grill. But I kept at it, adjusted the heat settings, time on the grill, etc., and got better results.

Searing meat caramelizes the sugars and amino acids found in meats when they come in contact with high heat. Searing, browning, or charing, is technically known as the Maillard reaction, which adds better color and surface texture to the finished product especially with good seasonings and lends additional flavor to the meat. Its what were used to seeing when we order a $22 steak in a restaurant.

How To Reverse Sear Steaks On The Grill

Once youre confident with traditional searing, why not move on to reverse searing your next steaks? Reverse searing is exactly like it sounds you cook the inside of the meat first and sear the outside last.

Youll still go through all the general steps of searing, although with the reverse sear method, you can get away with a shorter time for the steaks to come to room temperature since they will be exposed to a lower heat before the sear. However, instead of bumping up your pellet grill to 500 degrees at the beginning, youll bump it up at the end. In other words, youll prepare your steaks, pop them onto the grill, let them get to your desired level of doneness and then give them each a three-minute searing job.

Heres a low-down on the general rules to follow:

Heres a tip removing any excess fat helps with reverse searing along the outside of the steak. This practice also prevents burning parts of your steak as fat covers outer skin. Luckily, fat is easier to eliminate prior to grilling and searing, so this is a good initial step in the process.

The best pellet grill for searing are an innovative alternative to traditional grillers who want the convenience of gas without sacrificing flavor or texture. There is no waiting for propane to enter your burner, which means you never have to worry about flare-ups. The consistency of the heat allows you to cook more time with less energy, making it flameless and smokeless. The ash residue from pellets also make clean up easier because there is nothing left behind but a few crumbs.

The heat goes directly where you want it, giving you more precise cooking control. The best pellet grill for searing is made specifically for smoking and grilling by controlling the amount of oxygen the fire needs to burn at its most efficient, a fine balance of oxygen and fuel creates a perfect temperature for cooking. Heat shields protect the flame from wind gusts, which vary in temperature up or down.

What Is The Difference Between Grilling And Searing

Grilling is cooking meat by applying direct dry heat from below while constantly turning the meat so as to cook it evenly on all sides. Searing is cooking meat over very high heat in order to seal in its natural juices, resulting in a moist, tasty finished product. Grilling cook foods quickly over direct, intense heat. It is best suited for thinner cuts of steak, roasts and chops. These types of meats will not develop a flavorful crust if cooked below 300°F .

Searing cook foods quickly over very high heat on the stove top or in an oven. Only tender cuts such as filet mignon, pork loin and chicken breasts are ideal to be seared. These tend to cook more evenly than tougher cuts with less chance of overcooking when seared briefly at high temperatures.

Despite their differences, both grilling and searing are cooking techniques that share three common characteristics: They both create delicious flavors by caramelizing the natural sugars in food they constant attention so you cant just leave the food unattended and both use high heat.

If you are beginner, you may want to buy one of the best pellet grill for searing. Surely these models will bring you a wonderful experience when cooking.

Maximum Temperature Settings On Pellet Grills

Many of the latest generations of pellet grills have a maximum temperature setting of at least 500 degrees. For instance, as I discuss in my Gen 1 vs Gen Traeger Pro Series article. The same is true for budget/mid-range pellet grills from the likes of Camp Chef, Pit Boss and Grilla Grills, all offer pellet grills with a 500-degree maximum temperature setting. You then have the Weber SmokeFire which provides a 600-degree maximum temperature setting. As I discuss in my Weber SmokeFire Gen 1 vs Gen 2 article, while I have issues with it as a pellet smoker, as a pellet grill its very capable.

For under a thousand dollars the Weber SmokeFire Gen2 EX4 with its 600 degree maximum temperature setting is an excellent backyard pellet grill for searing: Image BBQGuys.com

You then have other brands such as Broil King who also offer a maximum temperature setting of 600 degrees and the same is true of RECTEQ pellet grills when their FULL setting is activated. When you start moving up into the premium/luxury pellet grill brands such a Cookshack, Memphis Grills, Coyote and Twin Eagles these pellet grills have maximum temperature settings between 600 725 degrees. While a higher temperature setting on a pellet grill is going to provide better searing capabilities, what the cooking grate is made of is also important.

How To Sear Burgers

Can you sear a STEAK on a pellet grill?

Set your grill to high heat, and throw that burger on. It will sear as it cooks. The trick is in the preparation buy an 80-to-20 ratio of meat to fat, and when youre forming your patties, make a slight indent in the center with your thumb. This will help the burger take the right shape.

Dont squash it! Those who succumb to the temptation of squashing their burger might think theyre helping along the searing process, but theyre actually pushing out juices, and flavor. This can slow down the process and dry out the burger. Check out our complete guide on how to prepare a burger.
