The Best Charcoal Grill: Weber Original Kettle Premium 22
File this under Simple Is Best. Though there have been changes and updates here and there, Webers kettle grills have had the same basic design for close to 70 years, and thats because it works. The Premium version of the kettle is a step up from the most basic model and comes with several notable upgrades, like a built-in lid thermometer to monitor temps, a hinged grill grate that makes it easy to add coals to the fire, and an ash catcher to keep sparks off the lawn. Its a Goldilocks situation in terms of size, offering a just-right 363 square inches of cooking area. That is big enough to fit a whole turkey but small enough that the grill is easy to move around. The Weber kettle maintains temperature well, in part thanks to a smooth top damper. Its easy to set up for two-zone cooking as well as for searing on the stainless steel grates. Its a grill with fans from every level of the grillospherebeloved by backyard grillmasters and barbecue restaurant owners alike. When conducting research for our smoker review, we spoke with Jonathan Fox of Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q in Atlanta who fondly recalled his days of learning to cook on this kettle grill.
Even though we think the size is perfect for most grillers, the one potential downside to the Weber Kettle might be its 22″ diameter. If you find yourself needing to make two dozen burgers or six racks of ribs, you might need something bigger. In that case, we recommend you consider the smoker and kamado grill below.

Tips For Grilling The Perfect Steak
- Season, then chill: I apply the same technique I use for getting crispy chicken and turkey skin to grilling this steak: season, then let it chill in the fridge uncovered for up to 48 hours. This essentially dry brines the steak while also letting it air-dry. This approach allows the surface moisture to evaporate while the seasoning has time to penetrate the meat resulting in deeply flavored steak that sears beautifully and develops a nice crust on the grill.
- Start with clean grates: Just like you use a clean skillet with a little oil to cook dinner on the stovetop, you want to start with clean and oiled grill grates.
- To flip or not to flip? Flip your steak to your hearts content. Harold McGee, food science writer and author of On Food and Cooking, discovered that frequent flipping creates a steak that cooks more evenly and quickly than those flipped only once.
- Grilling directly on coals: Raichlen seemingly knows an infinite number of ways to grill meat, and theres one in his new book, Project Fire , that I particularly like: he cooks steak directly on hot coalsno grill grates necessary. I love the idea, and its on my list of things to try in the near future.
Weber Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill 22
The Weber Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill 22-inch has a grate thatâs big enough for a whole mess of hamburger patties. However, because itâs easy to adjust the heat by opening and closing the vents in the bottom and in the lid, this grill is remarkably versatile and can definitely go beyond burgers and brats. It can turn out a perfectly seared medium-rare porterhouse or thoroughly-cooked chicken with a crispy golden-brown skin. The grate is hinged on both sides so itâs easy to add more briquets if youâre having a party and turning out hot dogs throughout the evening.
Extras include a thermometer in the lid and hooks for hanging up your tools. A heat shield underneath the lid handle makes it easy to lift without singeing your hand, and the lid rests on the side of the grill while you flip the steaks or baste the ribs. Underneath the kettle, thereâs a big bucket called an ash catcher you use a lever to sweep the ashes into it and then itâs easy to remove and empty without leaving a trail of ashes along the way. The only thing missing are side tables for holding a platter.

Can You Cook Steaks On An Indoor Grill
Yes, you can easily cook steaks on an indoor grill. Steaks prepared on an indoor grill are similar to the ones prepared on outdoor grills. You get the same taste and texture as you would get by using an outdoor grill. The advantage is, indoor grills are hassle-free. There is no smoke, the cooking process is faster, and the cleanup after cooking is also much easier.
Hamilton Beach 25361 Best Tabletop Electric Grill
If youre looking for a tabletop electric grill that doesnt eat a lot of space, then theres hardly any grill better than the Hamilton Beach 25361, if any at all. Not only compact, this grill can also cook well beyond initial expectations, not to mention the rare ability to sear steaks, to boot.
Food tends to stick
The grill measures 12.4 inches deep by 16.73 inches wide by 6.81 inches tall. With a modest cooking space of 118 square inches, its a perfect fit for a couple and a family of four, at best. Hamilton Beach claims the grill can accommodate up to eight servings, but we deem it to be an exaggeration.
The component trios namely the hood, drip tray, and the grilling surface are all removable and easy to clean, either by hand or a dishwasher.
The lid helps keep the food always sizzling hot inside the grill while offering a transparent and clear view inside the cooking chamber. That way, you can make timely adjustments without opening the lid too often, which can lead to losing heat.
Upon plugging in, it would take around five to ten minutes to preheat the grill. To our surprise, the Hamilton Beach specimen can sear steak well beyond what we can hope for and expect. Its temperature range is quite diverse, to be honest, going from 200°F to 450°F. Also, theres a light that indicates the temperature youve dialed to has been reached.

How Many Btus Should A Gas Grill Have
A general rule of thumb is that a gas grill should produce 80 to 100 BTUs per square inch of cooking area. By that math, a 200-square-inch grill should produce between 16,000 and 20,000 BTUs per hour. However, don’t base your decision on BTUs aloneyou’ll also want to look at the grill’s max temperature, as well as the quality of its build, both of which will affect its performance.
Flaws But Not Dealbreakers
We wish the bars of the Spirit II E-310s warming racks ran front to back, parallel to the main grates, like they do on our upgrade pick, the Genesis E-325s. That way, you could easily slide a spatula under stuff thats warming. As it is, the warming-rack bars run edge to edge, and you have to awkwardly jimmy a spatula in there sideways.
The Spirit II E-310 should come with a grill cover. This one doesnt, nor did any grill in our test group, so youll need to buy one separately. Webers dedicated Spirit II cover costs about $80, and a well-regarded generic cover costs about $30 .

- Food may fall through wide grate
People often disagree on aesthetics, but it was unanimous among our testers: This KitchenAid is one of the nicest looking grills weve used. From assembling it, we could tell its well built, with excellent alignment of the panels, doors, and shelves. Resist the urge to pay extra for assembly. Do it yourself, as putting this one together is easier than most. Instead of a blister pack with 101 pieces of hardware, most of its already screwed in the place it belongs, so theres no question of what goes where. During the heat distribution portion of the test, our bread indicated slightly hotter strips over each of the three burners. The stainless-steel grates are spaced a little wider than normal, and we found this helped make them easier to scrub off. It also means theres less mass to heat and hold heat, so the grill warms up and cools down a little faster than others. Plus, theres a bonus ceramic sear burner on the side, so you can cook low and slow if you wish and use it to add those dark grill marks.

On other grills, cooking more than one item at a time can be a struggle. That’s not the case for the Blaze Prelude LBM, which includes heat zone separators that help you create varying levels of heat with each burner. Sear on one side, slow roast on the other, and do everything in between to make sure your guests leave satisfied. As far as warranties go, it’s hard to beat Blazes usual best-in-class, lifetime warranty but that didn’t stop them from tacking on a 3-year, multi-user warranty that covers commercial settings like apartment complexes and condos.

What About Propane Vs Natural Gas
All of our picks are propane-gas grills, since propane tanks are portable and can be purchased almost anywhere, and they dont require any special hookups in your backyard.
However, our picks are also sold in natural-gas versions, which are gaining in popularity. But they require that you have a natural-gas hookup on your deck or patio. If you have natural gas in your home but dont have an outdoor connection, youll need to hire a technician to install one, and this may involve cutting into walls. And if you want to easily move your natural-gas grill into and out of storage, youll also need to buy a quick-disconnect system, which can add another $150 or so. The benefits of natural gas include not having to wrestle propane tanks on and off your grill, always-available fuel , and lower fuel costs . This post provides a deeper rundown of the process.
Of course, you may also have concerns about how each of these fuel choices might impact the environment. Theres no easy answer, but we discuss some of the considerations in the sustainability section below.
After weeks of research and two days of testing on burgers, barbecue, and whole chickens, the Weber Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill 22 is our pick as the best charcoal grill for most people.

Our budget-friendly pick is the Char-Griller Grillin’ Pro Gas Grill . For under $1000, we recommend the Weber Genesis II E-335, which performs well, is incredibly easy to use, and is backed by Weber’s historically good customer service.
Gas grills are the first choice for most Americans, and have been for many years. Their appeal is clear: No need to get your hands dirty with charcoal and ashes, just hit the ignition and set your cooking temperature with the control knobs. A recent survey by The Hearth Patio and Barbecue Association revealed that of the 70% of adults in the US who own a grill or smoker, 64% own gas grills. Manufacturers know you love ’em, so they keep rolling out new models year after year.
A dizzying array of gassers is available with prices from under $100 to over $20,000. To grab your attention, manufacturers of cheap grills often include bells and whistles like cut-rate sear burners, side burners, rotisseries, and lights to entice you to buy their flimsy, low-quality junkers, built with low-grade stainless steel and held together with crummy fasteners that will rust and break apart after a couple seasons.
There’s something for everyone in the vast gas grill market. People always ask me, “Max, what’s the best gas grill? What should I buy? What would you buy if you were me?” Better to start by asking yourself, “How much do I want to spend and how big of a grill do I need?”
